At It Takes a Village (ITAV), we know that life can present unexpected hardships, and not every family has a support system to rely on. That’s why we are here—to provide a safe, nurturing space for children when their families face crises. We understand that raising a child takes a village, and when challenges arise, we step in to offer care, stability, and support.

A Lifeline for Families in Crisis Families come to ITAV for many reasons, including:

-
Food insecurity – Ensuring children have access to meals when families are struggling.
-
Homelessness or housing instability – Providing a safe place for children while parents seek shelter and stability.
-
Job loss or financial hardship – Helping families manage emergencies and regain their footing.
-
Utility shut-offs (heat, electricity, water) – Offering temporary care while families resolve urgent housing needs.
-
Mental and physical health challenges – Supporting parents by caring for their children while they focus on their well-being.

How It Works
At It Takes a Village, we believe in clear, easy-to-follow steps to ensure that families in need receive the support they deserve — without barriers.

1. Who Can Refer?
Our program is open to anyone who needs urgent child care support due to a crisis. This includes:
-
Parents and caregivers: Self-referrals are welcome!
-
Community organizations: Social workers, shelters, mental health providers, and family services.
-
Healthcare providers: Hospitals, clinics, and mental health professionals who encounter families in need.
-
Domestic violence shelters and VAW agencies: When families are fleeing unsafe situations.

2. The Referral Process
Once you reach out to us, we will:
-
Assess your needs: We take the time to understand your situation and confirm that our program is a good fit.
-
Match with a caregiver: We’ll match your child(ren) with a trusted, trauma-informed early childhood professional who can provide immediate care.
-
Provide the care: Your child will receive care in a safe, nurturing environment designed to minimize disruption and promote emotional well-being.
-
Ongoing support: As needed, we can connect families to additional resources, such as housing, mental health services, or parenting support.

3. How Long Can Care Last?
Our emergency care is intended to be short-term, up to 24 hours, with the possibility of extensions based on the family’s situation. We aim to stabilize the family, prevent further harm, and help parents access the support they need without long-term separation from their children.
